Orihuela gets European funds for renovation of historic centre

The city of Orihuela has won European Union funds to be used in the renovation of the old town and urban nucleus of Monte San Miguel. The local council has won 10 million euros in European funds corresponding to the strategy of Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development.

The mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, and the councillor for the Environment and Industry Miguel Angel Fernández, announced this concession at a press conference, and confirmed that the works for the refurbishment of the old city centre are expected to take up to five years.

Orihuela thus becomes one of the three municipalities in the province of Alicante -along with the city of Alicante and Villena- to receive the maximum amount allowed to these funds, of which Spain has won more than 730 million euros, 83 of them for the Valencian Community. The distribution was made based on the level of development of each region.

The project will also involve an improvement in the use and quality of information technology and communication, which will allow residents to access different city council services through a "citizen card".
